to 27% more throughput. The extruders are manufactured at Coperion’s plant at Nanjing using mostly China-produced parts (gearboxes and some other process-critical parts are brought in from Germany). According to Joanne Shen, Managing Director of Coperion (Nanjing) Machinery, the plant now manufactures around 250 machines a year, most of which are from the fully-Chinese engineered and manufactured CTE series. Shen said there is a clear trend in China towards
more sophisticated compounding equipment. To that end, the company has a small team of sales engineers based at Nanjing to support the company’s high performance ZSK models, which are only manufactured in Germany. On its stand at Chinaplas, Coperion showed a ZSK 32 Mc18

DuPont provided more details on its new compounding plant in the Guangming New District of Shenzhen, which is now close to completion. Business Director Performance Materials Asia Pacifi c Philippe Hanck said the new Apollo facility will be inaugurated at the end of June and will ultimately become DuPont’s largest compounding facility.
Hanck said the plant, which will replace its current Shenzhen facility, will compound a wide range of DuPont engineering polymers including its Zytel, Zytel HTN and Crastin products. While not disclosing its capacity, Hanck said it uses the latest compounding technologies and has been designed to provide the highest levels of performance and production fl exibility.

China represents at least half of the volume we sell in this region,” said Hanck, who said the company continued to see growth in its Chinese activities as a result of its presence in fast developing application areas such as turbocharged automotive engines. Hack said DuPont was also benefi ting from renewed
interest in PVC with its Elvaloy polymeric modifi er, which acts as a high molecular non-migrating and non-volatile plasticiser and processing aid. He said its Elvaloy 742 HP663 grade in particular was proving attractive to automotive interior producers.

Chinaplas took place just before ChemChina (China National Chemical Corporation) completed its acquisi- tion of KraussMaffei. However, KraussMaffei CEO Frank Steiler was outlining how he thought the change of ownership from private equity fi rm Onex would benefi t the machinery maker. “For us, the advantage is not only having a very
stable owner but having an owner with a strong presence in the Chinese market,” he said. “ChemChina is different from our three previous private equity owners. Our last owner invested in the company and that gave us growth; ChemChina will allow us to continue that.” KraussMaffei has been manufacturing equipment in
China for more than 10 years and at Chinaplas showed its latest Chinese-built ZE Performance compounding extruders. The ZE 52 and ZE 62 Performance extruder sizes are completely assembled at the company’s production site at Haiyan. The machines feature in-house developed KraussMaffei Berstorff screw elements, modular barrel design and a compact base frame designed to accommodate temperature control and oil lubrication units. “China is a promising market for high-performance
extruders designed for a limited number of standard compounding applications,” said Michael Hofhus, Vice President at KraussMaffei Berstorff in China.
