The products in this family are at different stages of commercialisation, with the fi rst Ca-Zn grade, Lastab CP1023S, in the introduction phase.” As far as low interaction products are concerned, Johnson says the emergence of isothiazolinone derivatives to replace OBPA-based biocide systems in Europe (oxybisphenooxyarsine was phased out over toxicity concerns in 2013, Compounding World July 2013) brought the unintended consequence of antago- nistic interaction with standard PVC stabilisers in coated fabric applications such as tarpaulins, tents and architectural roof coverings. “This antagonism resulted in some loss of activity of the biocide coupled with a reduction in performance of the stabiliser,” he notes. “As a producer of both biocide and PVC stabiliser systems, Akcros was uniquely positioned to understand the issues and develop new products to overcome this. Several generations of product, including the very recent LZB1051, have been introduced to the market in the last few years, with increasingly lower levels of interaction.” The latest generation of these Ba-Zn grades, which are effectively non-interacting with biocide, are on extended trials with customers and close to full commercialisation, he says. Turning to automotive, Johnson says the trend
towards lighter interior colours, coupled with more stringent testing at the OEM level, has placed increas- ing demands on PVC stabiliser systems for artifi cial leather used in dashboards, side panels and upholstery. “The ongoing move from solvent-based coatings often used to fi nish the artifi cial leather to water-based coatings has led to a new problem of discolouration due to antagonistic interaction between the coating system and the PVC artifi cial leather,” he says. Valtris has developed a low emission, low odour
stabiliser system that offers good performance under high temperature ageing and that shows minimal discolouration when used with waterborne coating systems. The new system is currently being introduced into the market. It is a multi-component solution consisting of a high performance Ca-Zn stabiliser, Lastab CF419, together with a new proprietary booster package specially developed for this purpose. AM Stabilizers manufactures and supplies barium and calcium intermediates used in the production of mixed metal heat stabilisers for PVC. The company says recent regulatory changes such as REACH, as well as tighter end-user specifi cations and restrictions on VOC emissions from consumer products, are driving technology change in PVC products and the additives used in their production.
The latest addition to the company’s product range is a high metal content barium intermediate, PlastiStab 2534. This contains contains 34% Ba in a liquid form and is said to offer an extremely low VOC content, no phenol, no alkyl phenols, and almost no odor. When liquid mixed metal stabilizers are formulated with PlastiStab 2534, resulting products are free of these substances of concern, the company claims. It says its liquid calcium intermediates, PlastiStab 2265 and PlastiStab 2266, are also free of the above substances.
