The acquisition of Akcros will provide additional


manufacturing capabilities, increased product breadth and a global presence, “helping Valtris expand into a leading global player in the polymer additives industry,” the company said when it announced the deal. Thomas Specht, Manager of Marketing and Business Develop- ment, says the company’s position in tin stabilisers for the North American market will also be strengthened. Emphasising that point, Peggy Schipper, Business


Director, Lubricants (who has come across from Akcros in the US), says the company is introducing Akcrostab T-5330 6% butyl tin heat stabiliser targeted for high output, rigid PVC substrate extrusion such as siding and profile “where cost effectiveness is paramount.” She says: “Akcros tin stabiliser technology is designed to have more guts than typical equivalent tin competitive products.”


Specht says that while the acquisition of Akcros has


provided Valtris with a full array of both tin and tin-free stabilisers, its recent focus has been to develop tin-free alternatives. In fact, Akcros (as it was) and Valtris have both recently introduced new barium-zinc heat stabilisers. Last September, Akcros introduced Akcrostab BZ-5295NP for filled or pigmented flexible films and plastisols such as wallcovering or specialty fabrics. The company said it has been “developed to meet the lower volatility and tighter environmental standards required by consumers of vinyl building products. Akcrostab BZ-5295NP has no phthalate and ultra-low phenol.” Akcrostab BZ-5295NP is said to exhibit very good

ture products for indoor applications such as wallcover- ing, specialty fabric or upholstery leather are respond- ing to consumer desire to have environmentally friendly certified products,” says Akcros Technical Director Gary Sadowski. “Mixed metal stabilisers have become more challenging to formulate due to the narrowing of products that are considered friendly [but] we have been able to push the envelope.” This April, Valtris unveiled Therm-Chek RC896L, which it says was formulated without the use of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) under the European REACH regulatory system. It also features low phenol levels, low levels of VOCs and does not contain BPA or BHT. Therm-Chek RC896L can be used in flexible, semi-rigid, clear and opaque PVC formulations. The balance of heat stability and lubrication allows it to be processed on calendaring or extrusion equipment. It can also be used in applications requiring printability.


Low emission trends Some of the technical developments that Valtris is focusing on in Europe are outlined by Brian Johnson, Commercial and Marketing Director for Europe & Asia Pacific, and include low emission products, “low interaction” products, and bonding agents. He says the trend to reducing VOCs in final products that has been particularly evident in the flooring industry for many years is now extending into other areas, such as wall coverings and automotive. “In the early 2000’s, a typical PVC stabiliser formula-


tion for flooring would have contained ptBBA (para- tertiary butylbenzoic acid), relatively high levels of phenol, possibly nonyl phenol too and a high level of C4-C13 content contributing to VOC,” he says. “PtBBA has been replaced due to its CMR classification [carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction], phenol levels have dropped considerably…and nonyl phenol was removed , resulting in state-of-the-art Ca-Zn products such as Lankromark LZC525, LZC393 and the Ba-Zn products Lankromark LZB853 & LZB864 and Lastab DP767S.” Latest developments at Valtris focus on lowering
