amorphous PHA
(a-PHA) is softer and has a lower glass transition temperature than crystalline PHA and offers a funda- mentally different performance profi le. It is produced by fermentation and extracted using a patented solvent recovery process.
chlorinated PVC (CPVC) compounds are being used to manufacture heat resistant products such as pipes for hot water distribution and for industrial liquid handling. To preserve the high Vicat temperature, special external lubricants have been designed by Emery Oleochemicals for use in CPVC processing. “Our latest innovation was the introduction of Loxiol VPN 963, allowing a broad processing window, long production cycles due to its low volatility and no impact on the Vicat temperature,” Klein says. Additionally, the good separation effects between the hot metal and the CPVC melt is said to provide a smooth surface to the end product.
Bio-based technologies
Among some of the newest additive technologies, Metabolix says specialty PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) biopolymer resins miscible in PVC have been shown to be effective performance additives for fl exible, semi- rigid and rigid compounds. They are claimed to serve as processing aids as well as improve a range of perfor- mance attributes in PVC systems.
At the beginning of this year, the company said it was launching a new line of amorphous PHA grades, production of which was underway at a US pilot plant, ramping up to around 270 tonnes annual nameplate capacity during 2016. It says that amorphous PHA
Addition of the i6002 bio-based amorphous PHA additive from Metabolix can be seen to reduce modulus and increase toughness
Metabolix has recently provided specifi cs on one of these new grades. The i6002 amorphous PHA, which contains around 50% comonomer, can be used as a multifunctional polymeric modifi er for fl exible and semi-rigid applications, where it acts as a process aid and toughening agent. The company says i6002 is ideal for applications requiring very low migration, extraction, and for VOC formulations for the packaging, building and construction industries.
Also new is i6003, a semi-crystalline grade modifi er
in PVC for semi-rigid and rigid PVC compounds. It is said to deliver improved physical properties and processing benefi ts by acting as a process aid and lubricant.
“Use of i6003 can substantially increase usage rates
of mineral fi llers to provide signifi cant improvements in stiffness and rigidity, particularly for building applica- tions,” says Max Senechal, Vice President, Strategy and Commercial Development at Metabolix. It is also said to improve tensile toughness and tear
resistance and provide plastifi cation, without compro- mising clarity or UV stability.
