Chinaplas 2016 | exhibition review
China’s economic growth may be slowing but there was little sign of any slowdown in plastics industry spending at April’s Chinaplas exhbition, which saw record visitor numbers. Chris Smith reports
No slowdown at Chinaplas
There is no end of economic data available to show that China’s economic growth has lost some of its pace but that fact certainly was not refl ected in levels of attend- ance at the Chinaplas show in Shanghai in April, where visitor numbers hit an all-time record of 148,575 over four days. Those visitor numbers were up by close to 14% on the last time the event was held in Shanghai in 2014 and near 16% ahead of the attendance at the 2015 show in Guangzhou (the annual show alternates between the two cities). More than a quarter of the visitors at this year’s 30th
anniversary event were from outside of China, with Korea, India, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia all well represented among the overseas attendees. “Chinaplas has grown into a must-visit show for technology sourcing and exchange among industry professionals and buyers from all over the world,” said Stanley Chu, Chairman of Adsale Exhibition Services, the organiser of the event. While certainly pleased with the record attendance, Chu acknowledged that the growing visitor numbers and increasing exhibitor space demands are presenting a challenge for the Shanghai New International Expo Centre at Pudon east of the city centre. Unlike the China Import and Export Fair Complex at Pazhou in Guangzhou, the New International Expo Centre is limited on space; more than 16% of the total exhibition area of 240,000m2 at this year’s event was housed in temporary structures. Chu said the company is evaluating alternative

Shanghai locations for the future. With some 400,000m2 of space, he said the new National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC) at Qingpu on the west side of Shanghai is one alternative contender. However, it is not so well positioned for transport connections and there are some concerns over its ability to handle the machin- ery requirements. “We keep monitoring the situation,” he said. “Next year will be in Guangzhou. Meanwhile we will evaluate the options for what to do in 2018. That decision is still open.”

Americhem used Chinaplas 2016 to launch its fi rst Concept Centre in China. Located at its newly renovated and expanded facility at Suzhou, the Concept Centre houses a wide selection of product samples and is intended to provide a space to showcase the company’s products for the synthetic fi bre, non-wovens and medical sectors as well as its growing specialty engineered compounds range.
Americhem opened the Suzhou plant in 2006 and last
year expanded the size of the operation to support its growing business in the country. “We all know that China has slowed down but we have been lucky as the sort of businesses we are in are growing,” said Americhem’s VP and Managing Director for Asia Pacifi c Stanley Teoh. “We have invested to double our manufacturing site and compounding, mostly for engineering compounds.” The company’s core activity in China remains in the
