Mountaineers are individuals who seek adventure in conquering sum- mits, but who want to limit the risks as far as possible. So what is the connection with mushroom growing? Well, picking, but a host of other activities such as filling and ruffling, are often done from the platform of a picking lorry. A picker working at the level of the upper bed is at an elevation of some two to three metres from the floor. Not exactly Mount Everest, but it’s still a long way to fall, and serious injuries have been caused in the past. And even though safety measures are good on most farms, mishaps can happen, and accidents at work remain the responsibility of the company. The safety guards on picking lorries are often considered an inconven- ience (and therefore not used!) by pickers. Or the guards are not se- cured properly, so falling is still possible. One of my clients in Switzerland has come up with the answer, un- doubtedly inspired by mountaineering. Pickers on this farm have to wear a climbing harness that is attached to fall protection equipment that works like a car seatbelt: the belt tightens if it detects an abrupt, forward movement. The fall protection is attached to a ceiling-mounted rail so its moves along smoothly with the pickers. The harness does not hamper the pickers in any way and they soon be- come confident on the lorry, something that normally takes some time, especially for new pickers. A huge benefit of this system is that it is easy to check. You can see at a glance which pickers are belted up. After all, prevention is better than cure.
