Variety development Anton Sonnenberg (WUR) started his presentation by asking whether new varieties could go some way towards


turning the tide of stagnating mush- room consumption. “If you want to develop a new variety, you must have a clear goal in mind. Do you want to design a variety that gives growers higher yields, or offers consumers a better flavour? Developing a new variety is no easy task, and in Europe there is the risk that after many years – often at least four- of time-consuming work someone else ends up reaping all the rewards. We must prevent that happen- ing, which is the reason behind the alli- ance that has been formed by Sylvan, Amycel, the Limgroup, WUR, INRA and Lambert Spawn to better protect the breeders’ rights of the companies. But we should also ask ourselves whether it’s time to come up with something new. All the current varieties are much of a sameness at the moment.” Son- nenberg then entered into a discussion with the floor. Leo van Griensven pro- posed that alternative applications of mushrooms deserve to be investigated in greater detail. Jos Buth inquired whether disease-resistant varieties
