Reinders has been visiting markets in various cities with his stall for five years. The stall in Rotterdam costs twice what he pays on the weekly markets, but the extra costs are compensated for by the demographics of the buyers who repre- sent a large segment of his target group. “And they are prepared to pay more for exclusive produce.”


Reinders does not see sharp growth ahead for specialty mushrooms. “Con- sumers still have rather conventional tastes. It takes some time to persuade them to try new products. And initially the volumes are small – it takes years to achieve sales of higher volumes.” This is backed up by Reinders’ experience in other countries too, where his other en- terprise is active (Holland Fresh Food, specialised in importing and exporting wild mushrooms).

Sylvan Pleurotus Workshop in Poland


In September, spawn producer Sylvan hosted a workshop for Pleurotus growers and substrate makers in Ostrow Wielkopolski, Poland. This area has the largest concentra- tion of Polish Pleurotus growers and substrate makers. Jorge Calvo, technical representative for Sylvan Spain was invited to give the main speech at the event ‘Spanish sys- tem of Pleurotus growing - from substrate to mushrooms’.
