The grower “Yes I know. My name’s Walsh and my farm’s in Monaghan. But, apart from those similarities, I don’t have any con- nection with those Irish mushroom giants. My own trading company is called Goldcircle Mushrooms, and the mushrooms we market are grown on my own farm plus two others I own and sourced from a number of satellite growers. Our greatest challenge for the short- term is that if we want to continue supplying British supermarkets, we have to produce British

mushrooms. You have to be able to display the “Union Jack”, the natio- nal flag of the UK, on your produce. British super- markets attach a great deal of value to produce bearing the national logo. Coming in a good second is ‘produced in the Republic of Ireland’, as even though British domination is a thing of the past, we still want to feel like part of the family. The British Isles and all that… But joking apart, our customers prefer pro- duce from the UK, follo- wed by Ireland, then the Netherlands with Poland


in fourth place. Through Goldcircle I sell a good 130,000 kg per week, on my other two farms I grow flats and brown caps. You have to offer a compre- hensive range. I ended up working for myself after starting at – you can guess- Walsh, followed later by a ten-year period at Monaghan Mushrooms. I started this farm in 1999. Close to us is Peader Mc- Gee’s farm, we always try to encourage ourselves to aim for even higher levels of production and quality. The Irish sector has really caught up in professiona- lism, and I am very happy with my technical and operations manager Des McGuigan, his input has made a real impact on the company.”
