Aloha Medicinals in Carson City After a stunning journey by coach from San Francisco to Carson City in Nevada, we visited the world’s largest producer of 100% organic, American grown me- dicinal mushrooms, Aloha Medicinals Inc. We were greeted warmly by the en- tire staff at Aloha, and president and chief scientific officer John Holliday gave us a tour of the company. He also treated us to a fascinating presentation about the medicinal powers of cordy- ceps, a mushroom (fungi) that infects and grows on insects. The ability of cordyceps to boost the human immune system has been known for decades. Cordyceps is traditionally collected in the elevated mountain ranges in the Himalaya around Tibet and Nepal and in sections of China. Cordyceps collected in these regions is a rarity and can com- mand as much as $100,000 per kilo! Af- ter several expeditions to Tibet, Aloha managed to isolate various specimens and reproduce them commercially in their factory. In addition to cordyceps, the company collection numbers some 4000 different species and varieties of mushrooms.
