an interesting proposition! Not only does production rise, the picking performance also increases by 3.5%.

The maximum stem length equals half of the diameter of the cap with a maximum of 1.5 cm. If you fill a punnet with 400 grams of mushrooms with a more or less opti- mal stem length and then shorten the stems, you will lose 7% of the weight. So an average of 3.5% is not that bad! With production of 30 kg/m2 this equates to higher production of 1 kg/m2. The picking performance also increases, which is interesting for the pickers. Taken together, this represents a cost reduction of 4.4 cents per kilo of mushrooms, or € 13/m2/year. There are also other advantages, such as more attractive mushrooms, easier to trim and fewer stumps. So regularly promote stem length as campaign of the week!
