Book review: Organic Mushroom Farming My Farm: Tiernaneill Mushrooms (IRL)

In the last issue, I wrote about the fears that the Russian boycott would change the fl ow and pricing of mushrooms considerably, if not dramatically. A few months on, we can care- fully conclude that nothing much has changed in the overall mushroom trade within Europe. Polish exports to Russia have not ceased, and diff erent sources confi rm that a price freefall has not materialised. Prices have been lower after week 38, but this seems to have more to do with high production volumes and slow de- mand due to the fabulous weather in Europe in the last few months. Most Polish mushrooms seem to have found their way to their usual destination on a diff erent ‘passport’ and/or via a diff erent routing. So, the boycott has not proven to be the big game changer it threat- ened to be, although some warn that it can still harm the mushroom sector in the long run.

Discussions in the Netherlands have shifted from Ukraine to the future of the Dutch Mushroom Days, as major stand holders are at loggerheads with the organising committee. The former want fewer Mushroom Days events (planned in 2015 and 2017 with the Amster- dam ISMS conference in 2016 in between), and instead favour holding a large, joint scientif- ic-trade super event in 2016. The latter want to keep things as they are, stay with the old successful formula and hope for sustained support from stand holders and international visitors three times in a row. But as the saying goes: the risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision.

Talking about change, we thought our maga- zines needed a change for the better. We hope you like it.
