IN MEMORIAM Eberhard Peters

Eberhard Peters, who was editor-in-chief of the German trade journal for the mushroom sector “Der Champignon” until two years ago, has died in Bonn at the age of 89. He died on 18 September, but news of his death was only announced by the family in October. Peters was most widely known in Germany, where all the mem- bers of the Bund Deutscher Champignonzüchter- und Kulturpilzanbauer (BDC) knew and valued him for his immense expertise of mushroom cultivation.

amazing knowledge. Be- tween 1990 and 2012, Pe- ters served as edi- tor-in-chief, contributed articles and translated ar- ticles into German for the trade journal published by the BDC. Thanks to Peters, but also to his wife Inge- burg, the publication carved out a unique profile and offered outstanding professional content. His fluency in French also made Peters a frequently consulted adviser and dis- cussion partner, with a

wide circle of international friends and contacts. Pe- ters was also a member of the GEPC. In 1979 Peters actively contributed to es- tablishing an import quota for preserved mushrooms. This regulation, that be- came effective in 1980, has ensured up to the present day that a degree of stabili- ty exists on the European market for preserved mushrooms.

Eberhard Peters’ profes- sional knowledge was founded on thorough agri- cultural and horticultural training. On completion of his studies in Hannover,

Peters joined the team of horticultural association “Zentralverband Garten- bau ”in 1957, and worked as a teacher and lecturer on international cooperation in Europe. In 1966 he took charge of the “Bundesau- sschuss Obst und Gemüse” a German state cooperative for farmers and growers. Peters was decorated in recognition of his services by the “Zentralverband Gartenbau”, a leading Ger- man state organisation for horticulture, and also by international organisa- tions. These accolades il- lustrate how highly he was held in regard by the pro-

fessional community in Europe. The death of Eber- hard Peters, with his jovial and friendly character and still enjoying life to the full, signifies a loss to the mushroom world, and the BDC especially, of a high- ly-regarded individual, a valued discussion partner and a fellow supporter. The team at Mushroom Business/Paddestoelen, for whom he always had cheerful and encouraging words, also lose in him a valued colleague and a fine person. We would like to wish his wife Ingeburg and the Peters family strength at this sad time.
