In Store at… Varleys of Newtown
Proving that teamwork really does make the dream work, husband and wife Joe and Claire Varley have spent years building their business and expanding its
product range from a tile supplier to a ‘one-stop-shop’ for tiles, flooring, kitchens and bathrooms. We spoke to Joe to find out more.
Formed in 2001 by Joe Varley, Varleys of Newtown has gone from strength to strength and has encountered many progressions, including product range expansions, new premises and even a name change.
Originally known as The Newtown Tile Centre, the business started purely as a tile supplier in its first home of a small unit on the Vastre Estate in Newtown in the county of Powys, Wales. As the business started to develop, Joe decided to move the business to a larger showroom in 2004, where the business still stands today, at Dyffryn Enterprise Park in Newtown. This allowed room for kitchen and bathroom displays across the 2600ft2
space acquired.
Following the success of the move and business expansion, Joe went onto purchase a further two units at the Park,
20 | Tomorrow’s Retail Floors extending the showroom to 5200ft2 . This saw a major
refurbishment and restructure of the showroom, featuring full kitchen/bathroom tile displays set into three dedicated areas. Over the years, Joe and his wife Claire have put great focus on the displays and now have a total of 13 full kitchen displays and 11 full bathroom displays.
The introduction of so many new products prompted a name change for the company in 2010 when the business was re- named Varleys of Newtown Ltd, incorporating the fact that the business was now a ‘one-stop-shop’ for kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and tiles.
Not content with conquering one county, the ambitious husband and wife team decided to take on Shropshire as well when they opened a new tile showroom in Oswestry,
