CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK

Get Set for Clerkenwell Design Week 2017

As London’s coveted design festival returns for the eighth time,

we have a breakdown of what and who you can expect to see at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

The eighth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), sponsored by Renault, will return to the capital this May, showcasing a wide variety of home-grown talent, as well as hosting exhibitors from far and wide.

Running from 23rd-25th May, the three-day festival has been modelled to reflect the unique nature of the vibrant and creative London hub.

Following on from the success of last year’s event, which introduced a new layout to over 34,000 visitors, 2017 will again play host to hundreds of design-led exhibitions, showroom presentations, talks and installations. Activities will run over the course of the festival, with unique exhibitions spanning north to south from Spa Fields down to Farringdon.

CDW has been crucial in the promotion of London’s creative industry, spotlighting Clerkenwell’s unique history, craftsmanship and commerce. Over recent years, the area has seen CDW develop increasingly collaborative relationships with the local community and public bodies, working together to enhance the recognition and importance of this world-class design cluster.

The festival has taken a bold new direction for the festival’s 2017 creative campaign. The new visual identity aims to bring to life the excitement behind one of the UK’s key design calendar moments - reflected in its ranking as the no. 1 UK design event on Dezeen’s 2016 Hot List.

Each year, CDW presents new design projects and street spectacles, commissioned especially for the festival to sit within high profile spaces across the district. This year is no exception, with a whole host of striking and unique locations for the projects to take place; including an old prison, church grounds, and a world-famous nightclub. Working with some of the key pioneers in design, engineering and manufacture, these projects aim to activate the local streets whilst pushing the boundaries of design concepts, process and material capabilities.

William Knight, Consultant Show Director, said: “Clerkenwell is an exciting place to live and work and its dynamism is brought to life by Clerkenwell Design Week. We’ve worked hard to develop the festival with a wide range of stakeholders, locally and internationally; 2017 promises to be another brilliant year, building on the new layout.

“CDW is now both a sustainable model for design events and a unique visitor experience.”

The layout of the festival follows a trail linking seven temporary exhibition spaces and a series of commissioned installations, clustered in three key areas: Design Fields, St James and St John. Specialist way-finding design agency Space Agency will bring the exhibition trail to life with a specially designed way-finding scheme, allowing visitors to easily navigate the medieval street pattern.
