wood and the temperature, duration and intensity of the process, the wood will react differently. As a result, the wood retains its natural colour and variation.
An alternative technique for oak, used in Massimo parquet, are reactive stains. These stains – which consist of water, pigment, and ammonia – react with the tannin in the wood to create a natural iridescence both on the planks themselves and in between. Softer parts of the wood, i.e. the graining, contain less tannin and thus discolour less, while the colour change is more outspoken in the harder parts. What’s more, because these stains don’t accentuate the graining, the end result is a much softer look. Another surface effect process is ‘wire brushing’, which accentuates the graining of the wood. Finally, the surface of the boards is treated with several layers of either lacquer – for maximum protection – or oil – for the most natural finish possible.
6. PROFILING
During the milling process, the ends of the planks are profiled and the dropdown Uniclic Multifit installation system is added. Paraffin is applied on the click profile to optimise the joints and avoid squeakiness after installation.
7. PACKAGING
The floorboards are protected and readied for transport by adding a wrapcard and inlay. Straps and sturdy cardboard edge protectors are added to secure the package, while shrink wrapping protects the pallets against humidity and dirt.
Four on the Floor
Quick Step’s Massimo collection comes in four unique designs to suit every taste:
The ‘Chocolate’ and ‘Winter Storm’ floorboard designs are finished with extra matt oil to provide an extremely natural look. Thanks to the oil treatment, the boards are easy to repair in case of damage. The wood stain reacts with the tannin in the wood and doesn’t accentuate or enrich the graining. Combined with deep brushing, this results in a softer, more vintage look and a natural iridescence in and between the planks, since the softer and harder parts of the wood contain different amounts of tannins and react differently.
The ‘Cappuccino Blonde’ and ‘Frozen’ designs feature an extra matt lacquer for improved performance and stain resistance. Both are characterised by a deep, rounded brushing, which accentuates the graining and gives the planks a more outspoken structure. The ‘Cappuccino Blonde’ design is treated with wood stain and resembles freshly sawn timber. The Scandinavian-inspired ‘Frozen’ design appears to have been treated with white oil, but it’s really lacquer. These floorboards are reminiscent of cerused oak floors from the Middle Ages.
Developed by the Quick-Step in-house design team, all four Massimo floorboard designs follow the latest interior trends and combine a natural, untreated look with a truly luxurious finish.
