Smaller boards and tiles are better suited for rooms with limited space, and wider boards and larger tiles are more suitable for expansive rooms where there is scope to be bold.
Wooden boards, as well as tiles, are most effective when laid offset, and the most beautiful effects can be achieved if the offset is at least 1/3 of the total length; such as in a brick bond (1/5 or 1/3), or stagger bond (1/3) design.
It is also very important when you consider the laying direction that you also consider how you enter the room, and the length and width of your room. Your flooring should, wherever possible, be oriented in the direction of entry, and not laid crosswise, and diagonal laying can visually shorten a long and narrow room and make it look more appealing.
