FOCUS ON LVT

Come to the Dark Side

Karen Quarterman, Product Design Manager at Amtico, talks us through recent trends in luxury vinyl tile

(LVT) and how Amtico’s latest product offerings incorporate them.

Our world-class design team scours the globe for inspiration; from colour combinations and compositions to unique shapes and materials - all of which enables them to produce exciting new palettes focusing on tone and texture. This allows our team at Amtico to continually curate and develop our own interpretation of the ever-growing trend for the use of grey within flooring. From cool tones, pearl shimmers and pewter effects to elegant washed wood options, grey continues to offer consumers a sophisticated alternative to more traditional floor colour choices – something which can be seen in one of our new products – Umbra.

Umbra is a breakthrough development. We’ve designed it completely in-house and harnessed technology that allows us to capture pattern movement, which means no two tiles are the same. Umbra’s beauty lies as much in its usability as innovation. We wanted to push the boundaries but create a versatile product.

A master of shadow and drama, Umbra will redefine any project using shape, curve and motion to create original, breath-taking effects. Smoky hues, smooth lines and organic layers deliver soft flow to open areas and intense drama to intimate spaces. Analogue photography, darkroom processes and the movement of light are the inspiration behind the innovation that created the unique, non-repeating pattern which makes Umbra a breakthrough development for the industry.

Historically, retro and vintage flooring has always been popular with consumers and this will continue to be an enduring trend. Looking forward, we predict that purchasers will shift towards a higher quality finish and invest in simple laying patterns, as opposed to the traditional shabby-chic style. The premium design-led products in our Signature collection, for example, are available in a combination of laying patterns so that consumers can create a floor that is unique to them. The premium finish will not only appeal to this trend, but also provide a hard-wearing surface for greater protection – particularly in high footfall areas within the home.

Amtico Chroma Black Block Weave

This bold graphic texture means Chroma can be used entirely on its own or with a simpler product as an accent.

Chroma exemplifies this new premium, design-led offering. Boasting a bold graphic design and a striking metallic finish, this contemporary look is an exciting new addition to the Signature Collection. The large-scale print uses multi-tonal inks, layered textures and reticulated edges to create stunning depth in sophisticated colours. Use across a whole space for a dramatic look or create a stunning feature highlight.

We were intrigued by the shift in furniture, interior architecture and fashion towards metals with a more textured finish and deep, rich tones. We created initial exploration artworks by hand. This helped us capture the natural movement created by dripping and spraying paint and using beautiful inks to layer tone and movement across mixed materials. We then used hand-drawn surface pattern techniques to create the intensely detailed designs.
