FEATURE ONE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS
Today, the world faces new and complex challenges that affect us all. Climate change and diminishing natural resources; health concerns
and safety risks; youth unemployment and skills shortages. Cal Bailey, group sustainability director at NG Bailey explains why we need to
At NG Bailey, we believe that being a responsible and sustainable business benefits our people, our customers and the communities where we operate. It is why, in 2013, we launched One Approach, our five-year sustainability and responsibility strategy.
respond to these challenges to build a stronger and more sustainable society. e, and our
and save customers an additional 100,000 tonnes of CO2
goal by 2018 is to have helped our customers avoid half a million tonnes of CO2
e per annum.
We take our One Approach commitments very seriously. They are not token gestures. We want to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Each year we produce a Sustainability Report, detailing the progress we have made against those commitments. It shines a light not only on what we have achieved, but on our aims and priorities for the following 12 months.
NG Bailey has long focused on environmental sustainability, including how we manage and maintain buildings on behalf of our customers and end-users.
Environmental sustainability is an important consideration within any FM business and by working closely with our clients we seek to build sustainable, and cost-effective, solutions into the operational phase of a building’s lifecycle. For some clients, we now offer dedicated energy services to reduce their costs and carbon footprint.
For example, through our energy services alone we saw the carbon emissions for these customers reduced by 75,000 tonnes last year. These savings are more than three times greater than NG Bailey’s own carbon footprint.
Our aim over the next 12 months is to add to the growth of carbon savings

But long-term sustainability also has to have a commercial focus. That is why our energy performance programmes look to make significant financial savings for customers through reduced energy output.

LOOK TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT
FINANCIAL SAVINGS.”
By applying commercial innovation, direct investment and continually recycling energy savings into further energy reduction measures, we believe we can work together with building occupiers to help meet the significant global energy challenges that lie ahead.
Across the wider NG Bailey business we have committed to sending zero waste to landfill. Our landfill diversion rates have increased from 72% to 89% over the past 12 months, and in 12 months’ time we aim to have pushed that to at least 90%. We recognise that getting to 100% by 2018 will be tough, but it demonstrates how seriously we take our environmental responsibilities.
But being a responsible business means we want to help reduce another type of waste: that of the potential of our nation’s young people.
I believe we have a fundamental responsibility to create sustainable employment opportunities, and to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to have rewarding, long-term and fulfilling careers in our industry.
Over the past year we have doubled our apprenticeship intake, which currently represents 6% of our 2,500-strong workforce, and also doubled the number of apprenticeship schemes on offer since we launched One Approach. We invest £3m a year in learning and development.
In addition we have a schools programme, Inspire, that aims to excite young people about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers. To date we have engaged almost 1,500 through our schools partnerships, and our goal is to engage with at least 5,000 young people by 2018.
Despite these achievements, we recognise that delivering all 18 One Approach commitments is a huge challenge. It requires strong leadership from the Board and senior management team, but our people like working for a business whose purpose stretches beyond financial goals to embrace our nation’s youth and our planet’s future.
We’d be delighted if we could inspire other businesses to do the same.
