WHAT’S NEW? TOMORROW’S MENT ’S TODAY
Graham Perry, business unit director of iSite, explains how Big Data has the potential to deliver significant savings across the healthcare sector.
Property estates amount to one of the healthcare sector’s largest costs and organisations face increasing pressure to reduce operating expenditure. Through a more efficient use of space and improved asset management, as well as releasing value from properties that are no longer required, or are unfit for purpose, there is an opportunity to deliver savings. This can only be realised if organisations harness the potential of Big Data analytics for the assets they own.
Those tasked with managing property estates have access to huge volumes of useful information - from maintenance schedules and information regarding energy consumption, to lease terms and tenancy agreements. When viewed as a whole, this information has the power to enable much more strategic decision-making.
The difficulty is that this data is often spread across multiple departments, disparate databases and is sometimes held outside of the organisation by outsourced suppliers. That’s where analysing big data comes in. Building intelligence software can suck all of these data points into one system and present it in a bespoke format, allowing facilities and estate teams to view and interpret the data as a whole. The opportunities for this are significant.
Take lifecycle management as an example, by collating data in one

LANGSTONE TEAM COMPLETE FASSET
FM REBRAND The FM Services team at Langstone Technology Park were able to show off their credentials alongside the completion of a major refurbishment project.
National FM and property management company, Fasset Ltd were delighted to pose in the recently rebranded uniforms, bringing the national team under one umbrella.
With FM Services extended to 11 complex business, education, science and technology locations across the UK; including the BEST Network the team has risen to 250 colleagues. Anchored at Langstone Technology Park, Fasset is an exclusive provider of facility management services, ranging from technical engineering to housekeeping, and operating from a strategic network of regional centres across the UK.
A major project for the Langstone team in 2015 was
location, estate managers can compare the efficiency and age of a property with information such as energy usage and repair and maintenance schedules. An understanding of historic repair and maintenance programmes enables teams to identify issues where the implementation of newer equipment, such as a boiler, affects the older infrastructure.
A further example is the ability to compare energy bills across an entire estate. Here, facilities managers can identify poorly performing properties and
the redevelopment of the Main Reception and the final flourish was the park logo being embedded in the landscaped front lawns by the Grounds Maintenance team; the most recent offshoot specialist business to be launched.
Jack Prady, National FM Services Manager said, “The way we communicate and perform as a business is really important, I’m excited that we have reinvigorated the Fasset brand to better reflect who we are, both visually and culturally, for our people and our clients. In that regard, the rebrand is also a chance to celebrate our journey and achievements to date, as the business continues to strengthen and transform into some really exciting new areas.
With over 250 colleagues working in the business, having a uniform that unifies everybody is exceptionally important in our pride and purpose of delivering Facility Management services.”

implement measures to address such issues.
Of course there are challenges to overcome. A lack of communication between departments often means that data is often not shared effectively and therefore its value is unrealised. However the culture is changing and as back office shared services grow in popularity there’s no reason why estate teams can’t get in on the act.
NHS organisations have an opportunity to deliver significant cost savings, yet this will only be achieved through sharing and analysing the Big Data that holds the insights.
