SPACE PLANNING & INTERIORS
INTERIOR INNOVATION IS IN THE AIR
Esther Hooley, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for Fragrance Delivery Technologies Ltd, explains how innovative air fragrancing technology is changing interiors.
Companies can invest millions in getting their interior design right, from innovative workspaces to trendy refurbishment, and it’s easy to understand why attention to this area is so important. Creating the right first impression is essential for every organisation, yet they can sometimes overlook the significant difference a relatively small investment in providing access to effective, eco-friendly air freshening systems can make.
Money can be well spent on fabrics and furnishings but the presence of strong smells from tobacco, cooking, mildew, animals or people could undo all that investment.
Many air fresheners work by masking pungent smells with heavy perfume. My organisation has introduced a new air freshness system that uses pure oxygen and a proprietary odour neutralising agent to eliminate, not mask, any bad aromas, leaving only fresh scent in the air.
Another issue with some air freshening products that claim continuous fragrance is that they work well to start with, but their performance drops significantly over a period of time. This is due to their exposure to air, leading the various fragrance notes to evaporate at different rates.
The Oxy-GenTM powered method my organisation has introduced ensures exposure of only precise doses of fragrant oil, while protecting the reservoir. This guarantees that the scent of the first day is maintained throughout the 60 days of the refill cycle. Unlike aerosols that only spray a maximum of every 15 minutes,

the Oxy-GenTM powered system releases fragranced oil continuously for round the clock freshness. This method of providing sustained fragrance renders traditional timed- spray aerosol products obsolete.
A FRAGRANCE TO SUIT
ANY INTERIOR Perfect for receptions, waiting rooms, dining areas, luxurious lounges and washrooms, the oxygen-based system is unaffected by temperature, humidity or other environmental factors. Fragrance molecules are dispersed by the natural air movement within the area or room.
The compact design means this new air freshening system also works well in the transport sector, including the interiors of trains, buses and coaches, with the long- lasting fragrance making journeys a more pleasurable and enjoyable experience. Due to its focus on environmental and physical safety, the product is popular in the healthcare sector such as in nursing and care homes, with veterinarians, clinics and hospitals
Refills are available in over 25 fragrances across marine, floral, citrus, fruity, designer and oriental scents. Depending upon the type of facility, building managers may prefer the aroma of Flair with its mixture of delicate florals and watery notes or Zing, a freshly sliced, mouthwatering mandarin fragrance sweetened by lush, juicy orange.
Organisations have the option of the colourful Viva!e air freshening system,
or the practical Shield model, which is tamper-proof and perfect for facilities more susceptible to vandalism. The smooth, contoured design of the anti- vandal dispenser makes it difficult for anyone to grip and tamper with particularly when positioned at height.
MEDICAL INNOVATION
APPLIED TO INTERIORS At least 90% of air fresheners used in commercial or institutional premises are aerosol, pump spray or fan- driven gel systems which are not environmentally friendly. Only around 10% of today's market use more sustainable fuel cell technology, with my organisation providing the only oxygen-fuelled system – a more energy efficient and eco-friendly option. Fuel cell technology, based on a medical grade innovation used in the pharmaceutical industry is revolutionising the field of fragrancing with its emission-free and precise fluid delivery.
The growing demand for this type of technology stems from ecological concerns about harmful propellants, high levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and battery disposal.
The considered choice of materials when designing and specifying new or existing interiors is crucial to create a confident, caring and lasting positive impression. Now the facilities management sector has the option of an air freshening system that combines science, fragrance technology and sustainability.
