NENE VALLEY MUSEUM IS BACK ON TRACK WITH LEONARDO

Jonathan Hooper, Marketing Manager, Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd explains how flushable hand towels have reduced cleaning at a popular rail landmark.

For the second year running the Nene Valley Heritage Railway, a major tourist attraction near Peterborough, has been awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

It’s a tribute to the commitment of the volunteers who operate this exciting centre for steam and diesel railway engines that they have maintained these high standards when there are over 65,000 visitors every year. Those numbers of people are always going to ask questions of the washroom maintenance team, not just keeping the facilities clean, hygienic and well stocked, but dealing with the changes in washroom usage that comes from a widely varied visitor profile.

That’s when in consultation with CCL, the Cambridge-based supplier of washroom and janitorial products and services, Leonardo was approached to provide recommendations that met the range of differing needs whilst ensuring the most efficient of cost-in-use figures.

In demand as a location for high profile television and film productions including Casualty, Eastenders and appropriately, Murder on the Orient Express as well as offering train driving experience days and Steam Gala events, the Museum is a year- round attraction. Every one of those occasions has to deliver the same, consistently high standards on every washroom visit, because as we know, people notice poor facilities, and a

bad experience can be enough to put them off ever coming back. Installing Leonardo lever control dispensers meant that their single sheet presentation helped reduce over use as well as combating wastage and their good looks have helped create a clean and hygienic environment. As noticed in previous instances, staff have reported that this also helps to contribute to users respecting the facilities more and seemingly leaving them much tidier than was previously the case.

This is important on two counts. Firstly, Nene Valley is a registered charity and funds are always under pressure so anything that reduces the cost of materials is going to be welcomed. Secondly the volunteer staff are able to spend less time cleaning the facilities, allowing them more time to attend to other duties; making them much more effective.

Volunteer time pressures are further helped by both the hand towel dispensers and the Versatwin toilet tissue dispensers (which are also part of the total installation) having semi- transparent, easy-to-clean, casings that allow a simple and speedy visual inspection of stock levels with no reduction of hygiene standards.

Nene Valley Railway has yet another significant claim to fame. It is the home of the tank engine that was officially named “Thomas” by the Reverend W. Awdry, author of the much loved

children stories. Now “Thomas the Tank Engine” attracts a whole new visitor profile, this time family groups. Each year thousands of children visit the attraction and it soon became apparent that not all of these children had fully grasped the notion that putting hand towels down a toilet is never a good idea. The number of resulting blockages became an expensive and time consuming problem that needed to be quickly addressed.

Again CCL were asked for their advice and recommendations and they proposed a solution that has redressed the situation. Re-stocking with Leonardo flushable tissue has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the instances of blockages.

Leonardo’s range of dispenser solutions allows washrooms to be fitted with the most efficient and effective provision to meet the specific needs of the end user. With EcoLabel accreditation and 100% recycled product available it is an ideal partner for any organisation. The success of the Nene Valley Heritage Railway is down to attention to detail and huge effort and commitment. Leonardo is proud to be a part of its success.
