Researchers identified 18 occupations with clear links to adult onset asthma, four of which were cleaning jobs with a further three likely to involve exposure to cleaning products.

In an attempt to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, the European Union has implemented REACH regulations. The regulations compel businesses to identify and manage the risks linked to the chemical substances they manufacture and market in the EU and has established measures for gathering and analysing data on the properties and hazards of chemicals. Businesses now need to register the chemicals they use, with the 1st June 2015 marking the key date in which all businesses have to change the way they classify, label and package their chemicals.

now rest primarily with chemical manufacturers, facilities managers and businesses to manage their chemical consumption. This will incur a series of hidden costs for businesses that use chemical cleaning products, such as increased man-hours to identify and manage their chemical needs. Yet, this is a hurdle that businesses can side step through the use of chemical free cleaning solutions – one being aqueous ozone.
Aqueous ozone has been described as ‘nature’s chemical free cleaner’ and is created by introducing an extra oxygen atom to oxygen and water molecules. The instability of the third oxygen atom creates a high-quality cleaning agent, in which oxygen atoms search for something with which to bond, breaking down dirt, harmful allergens and contagious pathogens in the process.
The most important element of aqueous ozone is its ability to clean at the same level of chemical cleaning products whilst representing none of the detrimental costs that come with them. Being total chemically free, aqueous ozone is extremely safe to use and cleaning professionals will not have to endure the risks of skin, eye, and respiratory irritation that are commonplace with chemical based cleaning products.
In addition, aqueous ozone is more sustainable than chemical cleaning agents and as a cleaning solution is environmentally risk free when
being disposed of. Once used it safely reverts back into ordinary water and oxygen. The solution that is left can then be poured away with no threat of lasting environmental damage. Aqueous ozone also offers businesses economic sustainability. If businesses were to switch to a chemical free cleaning solution such as aqueous ozone it would positively impact upon a company’s sustainable business model. It is not uncommon for businesses to pay over £45 for a bag of chemicals that dilutes to 200 litres or £0.23 per litre, whilst aqueous ozone can be delivered for as low as £0.023 per litre.
It is clear to see that by continuing to use chemical cleaning products many businesses are culpable of negligence in relation to both their cleaning professional’s health and the wider environment. The European Union’s REACH regulations will go some way to changing such a detrimental industry but with alternative, chemical free cleaning solutions available there are alternative routes for businesses to consider in order to eliminate the health, environmental and monetary costs of cleaning with chemicals. Aqueous ozone offers environmental and economic sustainability whilst increasing a businesses operational efficiency – something no business can afford to snub.
