Metsa: Still Putting Sustainability First

Last year didn’t disappoint when it came to variety of requirements for washroom products, although at heart, the environment continued to be a key driver. Mark Dewick, Sales Director for Metsa UK & Ireland explained: “As we come out of the worst recession in history, it is heartening to see that most businesses still have ‘sustainability at their core’, and many of our customers demonstrate this commitment, although often in different ways, as some of our case studies demonstrate.”

An Environmental

Adventure Fun is at the heart of Camp Kernow, nestled high on a hill, above Truro town centre. However, the environmental theme could not be stronger at this award-winning, innovative and environmentally- focussed centre, dedicated to engaging children with the natural environment and inspiring them to live more sustainably.

Charlie Nicholson explained: “The life cycle of water is symbolic of the whole environmental nature of the camp, and it all starts with the bore hole. We pump the water up through the bore

hole using solar power. We heat it up by burning biofuel and once used, the waste water is captured and flows back into the drainage system. From here, it is piped to the top of a reed bed and runs along a slope, allowing the stones and reeds to naturally eliminate the impurities. It then travels along a soak-away and re-enters the ground underneath the Camp Kernow orchard, watering the growing produce, and starting the cycle again.”

This life cycle is further supported by Katrin Easy Flush Hand Towels. Charlie says, “Unlike other hand towels that we tried, the EasyFlush towels break down very quickly, and we can involve the children in the

production of hand towel briquettes, to demonstrate the re-usability of most materials.

“The fact that Metsa Tissue has such a good environmental story gives us something extra to share with the children, when they are making the briquettes. We especially like to tell them how Metsa replace every tree cut down, with four new ones, because this re-enforces our own tree planting initiatives.”
