Yes, we are “Amer- ica’s Dairyland” – also known for Cheeseheads, Bucky Badger and Brewer mania. But there’s way more to our story…
Within the state’s tapestry of tradition and deeply rooted pride, Wisconsin, among its many special attributes, is a national beacon for leadership in music educa- tion! Despite challenges throughout time, Wisconsin music educators have lit the way for generations of music students, providing top quality music instruction, from traditional to out-of-the-box, in- novative curriculum, that is often the difference maker in a well-rounded edu- cation… Hence our theme, “Wisconsin: MusicStrong.”
With recent passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which lists “music” separately as a subject that a well-rounded student requires, we are reminded of the cooperative effort by music educators to keep music at the forefront of education. Wisconsin music educators, collectively with those around the nation, exem- plify the importance of a quality music education every day, from the classroom to Capitol Hill, advocating for their students.
In this issue, also dedicated to the 2016 Wisconsin State Music Conference, we explore and celebrate the many ways edu- cation is strengthened through the vitality of music in our schools. We look to the future as we carry our tradition forward.
So together, let’s turn the page to another great year of history in the music making!
