technology

align all melodies (this could also be done live and recorded).

Create: Have students use a notation program to create their own eight-measure melody. Depending on age level, you could extend this activity to include harmony and accompaniment parts. Once finished, print and perform student compositions with the class. Use student preferred DAW to create a custom beat (kick, snare, hi-hat and baseline) to go with student compositions. Melodies can be recorded directly into programs like

Ableton and Soundtrap making it easy to the remix student compositions.

Collaborate: Students should team up with at least one partner to share their composition or better yet, create one together. Don’t forget to include an in- class performance and listening day for all compositions. You can also publish their works (with permission) to websites such as SoundCloud or Blend.IO. Each has built in streaming and discussion features that can extend the listening discussion outside of school.

Music at UW-Stevens Point Wrap Up

No matter what the technology is, or the ways it’s being used, what’s most impor- tant is to continue to provide our students a variety of opportunities to make music and be creative. Technology is a great tool for teaching and in the music classroom it can be used to help our students capture their musical ideas, create new music and col- laborate with others around the world.
