WMEA News Kati Seiter, WMEA President-Elect NAfME National Assembly

WMEA President Lynn Seidl, WMEA President-Elect Kati Seiter, WMEA Past President Jim Scheuer, WMEA Govern- ment Relations Chair Brad Schneider and NAfME North Central Division President Leyla Sanyer attended the NAfME National Assembly in Wash- ington, D.C., June 22-25. Thursday, June 23 was spent on Capitol Hill as 300 music educators and 100 college students from across the United States visited with legislators from their states. The Wisconsin leadership team visited the offices of Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson, and Representatives Mark Pocan, Reid Ribble, Glenn Grothman, James Sensenbrenner and Sean Duffy. Wisconsin NAfME-Collegiate member Justin Steger joined the WMEA leader- ship team as the first Wisconsin collegiate member to attend.

Our “ask” when speaking with our legisla- tors was to:

• Support access to music education for the most disadvantaged stu- dents by fully funding Title I, Part A.

• Support professional development for music educators by fully fund- ing Title I, Part A, Title II Part A and Title IV Part A & F.

• Support access to music education as part of a well-rounded education by fully funding Title IV Part A.

Now that music is enumerated as part of a “well-rounded education” in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), oppor- tunities for supporting access to music education at the state and local levels are evident. It is important that Congress do all that it can to prioritize ESSA funding.

We also thanked them for voting in favor of the ESSA as all Wisconsin senators and representatives voted “yes,” showing their dedication to a well-rounded educa- tion. In addition, we shared that we have been talking with our state senators and

representatives and that it has come to our attention that they are not well educated about ESSA and its impact at the state level. We asked for any support they can give with educating them on ESSA and the effect in Wisconsin.

Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25 were spent in Tyson’s Corners, Virginia attending seminars, breakout sessions, the North Central Division meeting and the National Assembly. Representatives from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Europe MEA attended.

WMEA Membership

Please find membership information for WMEA at www.wmeamusic.org or at the NAfME website, www.nafme.org. NAfME and WMEA membership is the same; therefore educators who join NAfME, automatically are members of WMEA. Non-members are encouraged to join and attend the Wisconsin State Music Conference from October 26-29. Member- ship provides educators with professional development, excellent resources and materials for the profession and advo- cacy for music education in Madison and Washington, D.C.

WAME News

The Wisconsin Advocates for Music Edu- cation (WAME) steering committee met in July and August to discuss the “Days of Action” initiative for Wisconsin. Over 40 music educators have been trained to talk to Wisconsin state senators and represen- tatives about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The ask: “We are asking members of the Wisconsin Legislature to support legislation that defines and backs music and the arts as a critical part of a well-rounded education.” Meeting with legislators can seem intimi- dating at first, but you are simply having a conversation with them about something you are passionate about. It is important to remember that you are the expert who is educating your legislators. If you are

interested in being trained, please contact Brad Schneider at brad.schneider102@ gmail.com.

WMEA Summer Retreat

The WMEA Executive Board and Com- mittee met on July 19 and were joined by the WMEA Council and Wisconsin NAfME Collegiate Steering Committee members on July 20 for a summer retreat. The WMEA Council and staff at the Wis- consin Center for Music Education gave reports and the collegiate members met with their advisor, Abi Pulvermacher, to organize and make plans for the upcoming school year. Time was also spent on the WMEA strategic plan. Please welcome new WMEA Executive Board and Coun- cil members Rebekah Mueller, Northeast vice president; Will Jansen, South Central vice president; Terri Felton, membership chair; Michael Hayden, technology chair; Paul Budde, research chair; Soma Pierce Smit, PI-34/mentoring chair; Judith Kirby, higher education chair and Mark Lak- mann, Tri-M chair. The retreat was well- attended and council members showed forward thinking and a great amount of enthusiasm.

Emerging Leaders

On Monday, July 25, 20 young music educators participated in the Emerging Leaders Workshop at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education. Advocacy, classroom development, networking and leadership opportunities were some of the topics discussed. In addition, an overview of Wisconsin Music Educators Associa- tion (WMEA), Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) and Wisconsin Foundation for School Music (WFSM) was given. It was a great day and the future of the organizations is in great hands.
