2016 WSMA State Marching Band
Championships Results October 15, 2016 • UW-Whitewater Perkins Stadium Shelley Hooper, WSMA Program Director
Congratulations to all bands that participated in the 32nd
annual WSMA State Marching Band Cham-
pionships. This one-day event brings families and communities together to support the musicianship, art, dedication and creativity of participating students, directors and schools in the culminating performance of the Wisconsin marching activity.
The day started with one band participating in Fes- tival Class. This class is for bands that are partici- pating in the championships against the standard of a judging rubric rather than in competition with other bands. A team of three judges (one music per- formance, one visual performance and one overall general effect) rated the band. In the competitive classes 31 bands assembled to perform for a team of eight marching band experts adjudicating the areas of performance, general effect, percussion and auxiliary. Award divisions for the competitive classes are based on a pre-determined score. The UW-Whitewater’s Warhawk Marching Band as well as the Badger Brass (a division of Wisconsin’s Own 132nd
Army Band) each presented two guest
exhibition performances. Additional exhibition performances included the Class AAA and Class A champions who competed in the morning and then performed again in exhibition during the Class AAAA and Class AA segment of the champion- ships that evening.
At this year’s championships, Dr. Glenn C. Hayes was inducted into the WSMA Marching Band Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is intended to recognize the contri- butions made by individuals to marching activity in Wisconsin. Hayes, who is the second inductee, has been integral to the face of marching band in Wisconsin for de- cades. He has directed the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Marching Band for the past 30 years as well as hosted and helped to or- ganize the WSMA State Marching Band Championships at UW-Whitewater. In addition, Hayes’ marching band program at UW-Whitewater is home to many future music educators who pass on Hayes’ love of music as well as his love of marching to their own students. Through his efforts with future music educators, Hayes’ legacy will continue to positively impact music throughout the state of Wisconsin for gen- erations to come. A plaque recognizing Dr. Glenn Hayes and his accomplish- ments will be placed at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education.
2016 Hall of Fame Inductee
Dr. Glenn Hayes Honored by WSMA Executive Director Tim Schaid.
This event would not be possible without an army of volunteers. WSMA wishes to thank all of the people who helped to make this event a success. Special thanks to Dr. Glenn Hayes and the UW-Whitewater students, faculty, staff and security officers that worked all day long making sure that the event ran smoothly. Congratulations to all of the participating bands.
