2017 Vision: Resolve to Listen More! Jackie Vandenberg, State Co-Chair, iListenWI
Like me, do you pass through January 1 every year think- ing that you should “take stock” just a bit and set a resolve to change up or get back on track with certain areas in your life or teaching life? I think that all of us,
whether we make a ‘formal’ written list of resolutions, or just remind ourselves of some things we’ve been wanting to
do, like to ponder this time-honored tradition.
Resolutions
This tradition goes back pretty far. The Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would “return borrowed objects and pay their debts.” Medieval knights took the ‘pea- cock’ vow after Christmas each year to “re-affirm their commitment to chivalry.” Well, perhaps chivalry is not your concern, although I daresay the other two goals could easily be current.
This year, along with losing that 10-pound gain from holiday treats, managing time and clutter a bit better and keeping a cleaner desk at school (these are aspira- tions, remember!), the iListenWI Com- mittee reminds you to enhance your life and the lives of your students with music listening!
Benefits of Music Listening
We’ve heard many times about the ben- efits of music listening to our health and wellbeing. Here’s a short list for review… Music listening:

Young Performers Initiative
• Helps us express and affect human emotion (King Saul, in biblical ac- counts, was reportedly soothed by David’s harp music, ancient Greeks claimed music had healing effects, cultures around the world are built on musical tradition.)
• Stimulates brainwaves or calms the brain and makes it relax, depend- ing on tempo. It can induce the nervous system to slow breathing and heart rate, lessening feelings of anxiety and depression. (At one time I loaned out CDs and encour- aged other teachers in my building to play them at independent work times or to allow individual stu- dents to listen with their own ear buds at appropriate times.)
