from the desk of the executive director Wisconsin School Music Association:

Ways You Can Serve Timothy J. Schaid, Executive Director

When this issue of Wisconsin School Musician (WSM) reaches you, most of you will either be approaching the close of your first semester of school or perhaps are already into the second se-

mester. Regardless, I hope the first half of your school year has been rewarding for the students and you, and that the sec- ond half is equally as rich. We hope your membership in Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) has been and will be instrumental in assisting you to provide quality music education experiences for students.

In the September 2016 issue of WSM, I included an article that talked about Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA), National Association for Music

Education (NAfME) and the ways you might consider getting more involved in committee work and/or the leadership of these two associations. In this article, I will share ways you might consider becoming more involved in WSMA as a music edu- cator from a WSMA member school.

Your school’s membership in WSMA permits student access to WSMA pro- grams and services. However, while the WSMA staff works hard to make WSMA programs and services as rich and reward- ing as possible for the students and you, WSMA cannot make this happen without the valuable assistance from music edu- cators such as yourself. In fact, engaging yourself in in the background work neces- sary for the success of WSMA programs and services is also a great way for you to advocate for strong music education classrooms in Wisconsin.

If you are already serving on a WSMA committee or in other roles associated with WSMA programs and services, we thank you! If not, I encourage you to do so. Listed below are several ways you might consider taking a more active role in WSMA programs as a music teacher from a WSMA member school.

• WSMA Festivals Committee – This committee consists of members from each of the following Festivals Sub- Committees:

° Festivals Adjudicators Sub- Committee – Responsible for the

oversight of all activities associated with adjudication of WSMA Fes- tivals, including review and devel- opment of rubrics and adjudicator training/evaluation.

° Solo & Ensemble Festivals Sub- Committee – Responsible for the

oversight of all activities pertain- ing to Solo & Ensemble Festivals, including the development of Solo & Ensemble Festival materials and formulating recommendations for the growth and development of Solo & Ensemble Festivals.

the WSMA Festival Music List, including the development and maintenance of each event’s music list and formulating recommenda- tions for new festival events.
