from the desk of the executive director
“If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, serving as a
festival manager or becoming a WSMA adjudicator/clinician do not hesitate to contact us.”
The WSMA Festivals Committee meets two times per year (January and June) to include breakout time for each of the sub-committees to meet.
• Festivals Technology Committee – Responsible for the maintenance and implementation of all phases of the district and state festival management technology resources, including formu- lating recommendations for further de- velopment of the festival management technology to better meet the needs of festival managers and the music educa- tors of students participating in WSMA Festivals. This committee meets on an “as needed” basis.
• WSMA Middle Level or High School State Honors Project Committees – Serves as an advisory committee to the WSMA program directors and the executive director as they oversee the general policies and workings of the WSMA State Honors Music Project. These two committees meet three times per year (HS = November, March and June; ML = December, May and July).
Note: Music educators who have served on one or both of these committees have commented that doing so is one of the BEST professional development
opportunities they have experienced. Reasons cited include expanding the music educator’s knowledge of qual- ity literature and rehearsal strategies, and the opportunity to network with nationally acclaimed conductors and Wisconsin’s finest music educators.
• WSMA Marching Band Committee – Serves as an advisory committee to the WSMA program directors and the executive director as they oversee the general policies and workings of the WSMA State Marching Band Cham- pionships. This committee meets two times per year (spring and fall).
• WSMA Publications Committee – Responsible for providing ideation, support and recommendations for WSMA publications. While focusing mainly on Wisconsin School Musician, its scope of involvement extends to newsletters, website and other WSMA publications. This committee meets two times per year (September and January).
• WSMA Student Composition Proj- ect – This is an advisory committee that reviews student submissions to the WSMA Student Composition Project, to include providing written feedback to students and assisting with award determinations. Committee meeting structure and the frequency meetings are currently under review by the WSMA program directors and execu- tive director.
• Serve as a WSMA District Festival Manager – WSMA District Solo & Ensemble Festivals and WSMA Dis- trict Concert or Clinic Festivals need a high-quality individual to serve as festival manager. A quality WSMA festival experience for students and their music educators is not possible without a festival manager. If your school is hosting a WSMA Festival or Clinic, please consider serving as the festival manager.
• Serve as a WSMA Festival Adjudica- tor/Clinician – WSMA District Solo & Ensemble Festivals, WSMA Concert or Clinic Festivals and WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Festivals need high-qual- ity adjudicators and clinicians so that student participants receive positive and constructive feedback regarding their performances. WSMA adjudica- tors are public and private music educa- tors, just like you! Consider becoming a WSMA festival adjudicator/clinician.
Note: WSMA adjudicators and clini- cians say doing so has helped them to better know the vast array of literature on the WSMA Festival Music List, including different interpretations of that literature. This has been valuable to the work they do with students in their classrooms. Additionally, WSMA adjudicators and clinicians have said the adjudication experience has honed their skill at providing positive feed- back to the students they work with in their classrooms.
If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, serving as a festival manager or becoming a WSMA adjudica- tor/clinician, do not hesitate to contact us. WSMA looks forward to your service!
In closing, I want to remind you that as executive director of WSMA, WMEA and WFSM, I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility to meet the needs of Wisconsin schools, music educators and the students they serve. As such, do not hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and ideas on how the associations and foundation might further develop our partnership with you. Know I am just a telephone call or email away. Better yet, the next time you are in the Madison area, make a stop in Waunakee and visit with me personally at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education. My best to you for a great school year!
