Challenge and Reward Your Group at the Wisconsin State Fair

Plan now to be part of the 2017 WSMA Music Showcase held as part of the Wisconsin State Fair on the Activity Stage (in the Expo Center) on Friday, August 4. This stage is open to smaller ensembles of all types and is a celebra- tion of music in Wisconsin schools. Past performances have included handbell ensembles, string ensembles, celtic ensembles, jazz combos, flute choirs, polka bands and small folk/rock combos.

Each ensemble selected to perform will receive free admission to the Wisconsin State Fair for students and directors as well as performance time on the Activ- ity Stage. This event is designed to give directors an opportunity to showcase his/her music program, challenge students and enjoy all the excitement that the Wisconsin State Fair has to offer.

2017 Student Composition Project

Composition is included in the National Standards for Arts Education, and is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music specified in Wisconsin’s music curriculum guide. The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the artistic efforts of Wisconsin student composers.

In this project, students submit original com- positions, written descriptions and recordings to WSMA in early March. A panel of compos- ers and music educators evaluate the works and students receive a written critique iden- tifying strengths of the submission as well as offering suggestions for improvement in future compositions. Awards are given based solely on merit with winners identified either in the High School or Middle School Division.

Students may enter in one or more of the following categories: Instrumental Solo Instrumental Ensemble Instrumental Jazz Collaborative Solo Piano Solo Vocal Solo
