Page 32 Scaling

I have over the years had many discussions with people regards the sizing of their planting. For anybody in the design business this boils down to something we call scaling. That means that you should put something that is proportionate to the space it is in otherwise it becomes lost.

The easiest way to think about this is if I have a very small courtyard garden I can put a small number of plants in it, if I was to plant a large garden, obviously, I have to plant more plants, but ideally, I also should increase the size of the plants. This is the sticking point that sometimes causes confusion. This is exactly what scaling is. If I plant a 40/50cm tall hibiscus in a court yard, it does its job nicely, now if I put that same plant into a large garden, your good-sized plant suddenly looks dwarfed in comparison to its surroundings.

To make scaling effective you must increase the size of the plants relative to their surroundings which unfortunately normally means, the bigger the garden, the higher quantity of plants, and larger plants, are required to give it some impact. Unfortunately, this is normally followed with a larger cost.

Obviously, all plants do grow and we also have limitations on the size of plants we sometimes can supply, because of the way they root.

The next thing to understand is what size each of these plants will be when they become mature. This is part of what we do for our customers. We can custom create plant lists to their budgets and make sure they get the best plants in the best places and look at pushing the budget into the plants where it is required. Some plants are very quick growers so we can normally worry about them a little less, but with some specimen planting, sometimes a particular height or size is required for a reason.
