British Government websites advertise calling 999 to “Stop a crime! Report a fire! Save a life!” Here in Spain the main emergency number is 112, and just as with the British 999 number, calling this number usually triggers a tiered response by the local police department, fire department, or local medical services.
But here in this article we will focus on the “Save a life” portion, because the situation in Spain is very different from the UK.
In the UK an ambulance will usually be able to get to you relatively quickly; in Spain amongst the many hidden and ‘off sat-nav’ streets, remote caminos and urbanisations, it may take a long time for an ambulance to find you let alone reach you. In the UK most ambulances come equipped with life saving equipment and a paramedic; in Spain many state ambulances are very basic, and may only come with the driver. In the UK an ambulance will take you to the nearest, or most appropriate hospital given the medical condition; in Spain many ambulances are under orders to take you to certain hospitals only, notwithstanding if this might be the best thing for you or not.
In short.....‘chalk and cheese’ is an appropriate way of comparing the services offered by the two ambulance services.

home....because with a medical emergency such as a stroke, every minute matters about how quickly medical help can get to you.
If an incident happens away from home every AAEdJ member holds their own individual membership card, and also can carry a key fob with the 24 hour emergency number 96 579 6099 shown, and also with a QR code giving their individual personal details. They will reach you rapidly using GPS.
And once the AAEdJ ambulance reaches you and the immediate medical situation is under control, the ambulance will speed you to the most appropriate hospital for your condition – we work with all hospitals in the area, both private and public. And even more than this, before the ambulance actually arrives at the hospital all the information about your situation will be radioed through to the hospital, so that an emergency team is waiting for your arrival. Hence no time-wasting ‘triage’ to go
through....the hospital team will be able to start work straight away.
