Club Fit getfit New Year’s Challenge 2017

The Club Fit getfit New Year Challenge was a 12- week fitness challenge hosted by Club Fit Jávea. The challenge ran from 16th January to 14th April 2017. The participants were selected by Club Fit fitness experts after a talk about their health history and their fitness goals and a fitness test. Goals at the Club Fit getfit New Year’s Challenge were, for example, weight loss, lowering blood pressure, reducing back and joint pain, improving mobility, and increasing overall fitness.

After just three months of training under professional guidance and with individually coordinated training plans the participants were able to achieve outstanding results:

All Challengers can be proud of themselves. In all tested categories (cardiovascular system, coordination, strength in the legs, strength in the arms, core strength, balance and agility) each individual participant has significantly improved.

The greatest improvements were made in the area of the cardiovascular system. Here, on average, a performance increase of 27% occurred. This means that the hearts of the participants have become almost one-third more efficient and are able to work much more economically. When performing everyday activities, such as climbing stairs and a brisk walk, they don’t get out of breath quickly.

There were also positive developments in the field of strength. All 3 body parts, the arms, the legs and the torso show significant adjustments to the training with an improvement of 23-25%. The average increase in muscle strength has a positive effect on the participants in a way that it is much easier for them to work in the house and in the garden or to lift heavier objects such as shopping bags. Above all, by strengthening the abdomen and back, they prevent back pain and injuries in the future.

Outstanding results were also achieved by the participants in strengthening the knee joints. Two participants (Claire Cunningham and Angela Wölfle), who suffer from knee pain due to degeneration of the joint structure, participated in the Mirador Challenge at the beginning of April, where they had to walk 29km along Javea’s coast.

It was also important to improve coordination and balance, as well as reaction - which ensures greater safety, especially in everyday life. With regard to fall prevention and injury prevention, these factors are of fundamental importance.

We are particularly pleased, however, that the subjective feeling of the Challengers – that their body shape is more defined - is also substantiated by facts.

Overall, all 8 participants together lost about half a metre in only 12 weeks. They not only improved their quality of life but have also reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and other so-called civilisation diseases.
