Dilly Dip

My grandmother-in-law Carolyn Cazort passed away in February. She was 94 and the matriarch of my husband’s family. The Cazort family —originally spelled Cossart —made its way to Arkansas in the 1840s. Carolyn’s most famous recipe was her “Dilly Dip.” It was a homemade dill dip served in a pumpernickel bowl, or when pumpernickel was not available, with some sort of brown bread. She would hollow out the bowl and then place the dip in the hole and use the bread to dip inside.

After her death, while working on this story, I was thrilled to find her hand written, faded recipe for Dilly Dip in a Ziploc baggie in the kitchen. Dilly Dip was one of the recipes people recalled on Facebook and while it was not my family’s tradition, I have fallen in love with it.

1 cup mayonnaise 1 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon finely minced red onion 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 1 teaspoon dill weed

1 teaspoon Bon Appetite (can substitute a dill or lemon seasoning)

Stir all ingredients together, cover and refrigerate overnight. When it’s time to serve, hollow out part of a pumpernickel bread bowl and reserve the bread you removed. Place the dip in the bread. Serve the bread pieces on the side with carrots. When you run out of bread, start eating the bowl.
