In 1972, the Buffalo River was established as America’s first national river. It flows freely for 135 miles and is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48. It was the early 1970s, and Morgan decided to escape for a quick trip.


It would change the rest of his life.


“I floated it five times in one day from Boxley to Ponca. It was a wild ride. I fell in love with the river and you could say I married her. It’s a great river and the economic engine of this area,” he says in his Southern accent, which is distinctly New Orleans.


So the Morgans began to travel back and forth between Arkansas and New Orleans for the next few decades, then moved to Arkansas and 12 years ago purchased The Arkansas House in Jasper.


While today it serves as an inn, The Arkansas House was originally built as a boarding house in 1934, and later was converted to a bed and breakfast.
