and worked so hard on this land. And I got to inherit it. I didn’t earn it. I feel so blessed. To see my son and granddaughter taking care of this land now, feels so natural.”
It’s no wonder farming has come natural to Joey; he grew up farming and was raised helping his mom sell her produce at the same farmer’s market. Customers loved him. Today, customers love Elizabeth who was counting change back at such a young age that customers would tip her because they were amazed at her math skills. Elizabeth, 10, is the sixth generation to live on the farm.
At Crossroads Gardens, they believe in and implement organic practices. The chickens are free range. They grow an abundance of heirloom tomatoes and other heirloom varieties, but also have discovered a niche with Asian vegetables. They planted 9,000
onion plants this year, and will sell thousands of pounds of tomatoes and potatoes. Joey says he enjoys the challenge of growing new things and is always experimenting.
Together with his family, Joey is continuing a legacy.
“History is treasured in this house and it is passed on from one generation to another. How sad that people now have to go to the internet to try and find out who their ancestors are,” said Beth, Joey’s mom.
“When Joey gave his (senior) speech in high school, he said ‘My roots run deep in these Ozark hills,’ ” she said. “He can trace his ancestors to the Cherokee. When I grew up, I heard stories of my ancestors and they were as real to me as the people who came after me. It’s how it ought to be.”
Elizabeth has her own play house. When she was only a toddler, Elizabeth would join daddy in the greenhouse.
