Keep some old clothes aside for gardening, as children are bound to get dirty as they examine leaves and soil, and learn where food comes from. They can get involved with window boxes, or making “cress heads,” or if you have outdoor space give them their own plot, which gets plenty of sunshine. Go to the garden centre together and let your child choose several diff erent seeds, to avoid disappointment if some don’t fl ourish.
PlayTime
Plant quick sprouting seeds – sunfl ower, cress, salad seeds and herbs.
Photograph the stages
of growth and start a scrapbook. With anything edible, children can be involved from planting to cooking.
Research, together, what attracts bees and butterfl ies.
Lift rocks and logs and examine what
you fi nd with a magnifying glass. Handle bugs and worms gently and return to where you found them Enjoy the sound of birdsong and rustling bushes, the taste of mint and peas freshly picked.
