or narrowly escape the jets, whilst remaining dry- ish too! And so, by my tenth lap of the pool I had to admit that these ugly fountains were nevertheless brilliant for bringing out adult’s playfulness, a quality that sadly often gets lost in the pressures of daily life. As importantly, these adult’s playful interactions will help ensure that swimming conjures up fun memories for life.

Like creativity, playfulness is a skill and a way of looking at things that will become increasingly important to mankind as we strive to fi nd ways of coexisting on our fragile planet. Playfulness is also a fundamental foundation of close attachment between a carer and child. Of course, in the hands of a playful adult everything can become fun, be it pegging out washing, hoovering the fl oor, washing up, posting a letter or doing the weekly shop. What matters most is us adult’s taking the time to notice children’s interests; understand their needs; appreciate the potential for discovery, apprenticeship and fun in everyday activities; and be in the moment, not on our smart phones, so that we can share precious moments with our children. If we can do our bit to make May the month of play, then it won’t be just our children who reap the rich rewards but their children too!
