‘Our car boot sales raise
over £70,000 a year’ ‘The PTA at Chiswick School has been running monthly car boot sales (11 a year) for more than 20 years. The sales typically raise between £70,000 and £80,000 per annum, but have raised as much as £100,000. As one of the few local schools in the a car boot sale seemed like a sensible option.
then it has turned into something akin to a small business. The car boot sales are run by parents and ex-parents of the school, as well as some sixth- formers. Volunteers are organised into four teams, each headed by two team leaders. Each sale is run by one of the teams in rotation. Parents volunteer for three-hour shifts between 6am and 3pm. As the sales have grown, so the costs of running
them have increased – these include the hire of portable loos, the removal of rubbish and paying marshals to organise vehicles arriving overnight. Charges vary from large vans (£60) to walk-in sellers (£10). Buyers pay £1; children are free. We have a loyal following of car boot buyers,

‘We won £20,000-worth of lab furniture in a national competition!’
‘Having the chance to enter Innova Design Solutions’ Lab of the Future competition was an incredible opportunity. We already had plans to repurpose our old lab into a mixed sciences lab, designed – by our own students. In the initial planning stages, the four girls
what pupils and teachers wanted from the space. They beat off competition from across the
country, with a well-thought-through 52-page document detailing end-user requirements, environmental factors, materials, equipment, technology needs, and health and safety. In fact, Innova Solutions said it was one of the most detailed and creative proposals they’d ever seen! One of the main concerns for the girls was how
accessible the teacher could be to the students. The new horseshoe-desk layout, which the girls invented themselves, gives the teacher a clear view of all students. The clever layout also

provides ample space for the teacher to circulate and attend to individual students quickly.
