CASE STUDY: FOREST SCHOOL SUCCESS

‘We applied for a grant from Awards for A ll, and two weeks later I received the news that we had been successful! We were awarded £9,497-worth of funding, and the money is being spent on developing our facilities into a Forest School. We wanted an inspirational, fun

area where the pupils could explore the natural world, increase their levels of outdoor activity, and create memorable experiences. The grassed area at our school was perfect for the project – with sheltered areas, containing plants and trees, it was ideal for exploration and climbing. We began by planting around 300

trees with the pupils, teachers and parents, and purchased an impressive willow sculpture for the entrance

to the forest. The area has a winding pathway, plus a secure fence to cordon off an section for younger children. We also bought tools, rope, and canvas for woodwork, rope work and den building, plus a tool store to keep the equipment secure. There’s also a mud kitchen for messy

At the end of the year, I will be required to send a project report to the grant-givers, outlining the outcome of the funding.’ Dean Laybourne, School Business Manager, Marlborough Primary School, Washington, Tyne and Wear (186 pupils)
