CASE STUDY: OPEN-AIR THEATRE

‘Moor House School & College in Oxted, Surrey, offers specialist teaching, therapy and residential care to children and young people aged 7 to 19 who have severe and complex speech and language disabilities. A parent suggested we host a theatre

event at the school. After a chat with Oliver at Illyria, we agreed to hold an  Touring theatre company Illyria is

now the country’s foremost theatrical interpreter of Roald Dahl’s work. On 15 July, we invited students, families, staff and residents from the local community to watch the heart-warming story of Danny, the Champion of the World. Two parents put together a planning committee with some members of the

fundraising team. This wasn’t an event for the faint-hearted, with many things to organise and consider in advance, from a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) and risk assessment to recruiting  tickets. Many staff volunteered their time for marshalling and overseeing car parking and the evening ran smoothly. Once the date was set, we started

marketing. We advertised internally, through social media, and asked shops and businesses in the local area to  permission, at other local events. As well as selling tickets on site,

we used Illyria’s online booking facility. This made purchasing tickets easy for parents and meant we didn’t have to

members were invited to bring their  a refreshments stall, organised and manned by members of the PTA, and offering Pimm’s, sweets and soft drinks. We sold 300 tickets and the event

raised £3,714.45 in total. It was a truly fantastic evening and the children were still giggling as they left to go home. We can’t wait to invite Illyria back
