WORKING WITH LOCAL ORGANISATIONS CAN BRING HUGE BENEFITS TO YOUR SCHOOL, BUT WHO SHOULD YOU APPROACH AND HOW?

James Curtis won the Young Ambassadors competition in 2016. James, 16, has double cochlea implants and is a mentor for deaf children, supporting parents of newly diagnosed hearing- impaired children. He helped raise £420,000 by organising the AVUK Loud Shirt Day. James is being presented with his award by Heather Jeavons, Chair of Council for Lions Clubs British Isles & Ireland

CASE STUDY: LIONS CLUBS YOUTH INITIATIVES

Is your school keen to develop motivated and capable young people? Would you like to provide more opportunities for individuals to get involved in helping others? There are 850 Lions Clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland that run initiatives with schools, to encourage young people to play an active role in building stronger communities. This is a special year for Lions Clubs

International as it celebrates its centenary, and it is calling for schools to help nurture the next generation of community volunteers. Leo Clubs give young people the chance to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Schools-based Leo Clubs provide boys and girls, aged 12-18, with fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities aimed at helping others.

Lions Lifeskills (lionslifeskills.co.uk) has a wealth of original educational resources on topics such as alcohol, smoking, drugs, sexual health, body image, obesity, bullying and self-esteem. Loss, change and bereavement resources help children cope with life-changing experiences such as a family breakdown or the death of a relative or friend. Young Ambassadors of the 21st Century is a competition that recognises the accomplishments of passionate community champions aged 15-18 years. An annual bursary is granted at national level to support the candidates’ project or for training. Lions Clubs look for new candidates between June and October. Young Leaders in Service Awards sees gold and silver awards presented each year to hundreds of young people.

These prestigious awards celebrate 11- to 18-year-olds who are committed to helping others within their community. Youth Camps and Youth Exchange programmes enable thousands of young people to travel overseas each year to discover different cultures and build lasting friendships. Young people then become international ambassadors. Lions International Peace Poster Contest encourages young people (aged 11-13) to express their hopes and aspirations for the world in a creative way. The theme for 2017 is ‘The Future of Peace’. The competition is open to schools until September 2017.
