End-of-year and back-to-school events
... and I say
Make a fuss of welcoming families back to school this autumn and it will pay dividends in boosting parental involvement for the future
HELLO
New and old dinner To welcome new parents, create a pop-up restaurant at your school early in the autumn term. Send personal invitations to families of parent governors or the parent council, seating at least one ‘old’ family on each table of newbies. This will give new parents the chance to connect with someone who already knows the ropes. It’s the perfect opportunity for
Back-to-school barbie A casual cook-out will establish your school as fun and family-friendly, and a laid-back barbecue offers a stress-free way to connect school staff with new pupils and parents. Invite governors and local business leaders along to help build bridges across your school community. If you need a focal point, how about adding an adults vs children rounders tournament? Contact local butchers and breweries for donations.
Beetle drive ‘Beetle’ is quite a simple game of rolling dice and drawing a beetle, but when you run it as a beetle ‘drive’ you add in the element of moving tables – this makes for a lively and sociable event! FundEd members can download our step-by- step guide to running a beetle drive at

more about the school – from another parent’s perspective. Include a quiz to help break the ice.
Quiz night Host a quiz night for families and staff – students and parents love trying to beat the teachers' team and this helps break down barriers. There are hundreds of free quiz sheets available to download from the Internet. Don’t worry too much about prizes; simply offer a cut of the stake pot. Treasure hunt A treasure hunt is particularly good for new families joining the school, giving them the chance to explore. Create a map of the school grounds with clues or simple tasks to complete along the way. Encourage them to visit areas of particular interest, such as your music room, media centre or MUGA.
