MANRING, from p. 54

Coda “Put Claude in the Hall” of Famous Missourians needs YOUR help. Among the other important advocacy issues you can support, your state representative must hear from you in order to support Claude T. Smith’s nomination for the Hall. The office of the House Speaker determines inductees for this prestigious honor. Pam Smith Kelly’s tribute to her father, the book Harmony from Within,” provides a wealth of insight and perspectives on Claude’s brilliant career in music.

LITWILLER, from p. 55

In concert and festival season it is easy to lose perspective about performers, music, and life, because musicians too often base success on ratings or applause, not necessarily the benefits to the students. If you are doing your job, this time of year can be demanding and stressful as you prepare for performances. Remember that the music you are teaching and, more importantly, how you are teaching it, will remain with your students for decades to come. Your attitude and philosophy is reflected in your work and is the legacy you leave for our profession. A first job as a music educator in a small town still resonates within the Boonville community as former students, their children, and grandchildren pass on his love of music.

As a music educator you are the person that can be a positive musical influence on young people in Missouri. Right now! Your work is important and this profession matters—not just to the students you teach—but to the adults they become and the generations to follow. It’s more than just concerts, ratings, trips, and festivals. It’s the future.

Now get back to work!
