News fom the Districs DISTRICTS, from p. 38

question at 10:00 p.m. on a Saturday evening. It gives me, as an educator, an incredible feeling of self- worth knowing that a student cares enough about what I’m teaching him to seek out my expertise at random times outside of the normal school day. There is no doubt in my mind that this student will go on to do great things, in music and in life, because of the learning opportunities that he’s had in my class. Are we going to impact every student we encounter to that level? Probably not; but if our end goal isn’t a one rating at contest and instead is creating an environment where students constantly seek out knowledge to prepare them for whatever they choose to do in life, maybe, just maybe, we’re doing a greater service to our students.

ST. LOUIS SUBURBAN DISTRICT #5 Aaron Lehde, MMEA District President

Congratulations to the following SLSMEA 2016-17 award winners. Hall of Fame Award – Jeff Lindhorst, Ladue – Retired; Hall of Fame Award – Winifred Crock, Parkway – Retired; Outstanding Music Educator Award – Brian Reeves, Parkway; Outstanding Music Educator Award – Steve Patton, Rockwood; Merit Award – Jessica Ingraham, Education Director, St. Louis Symphony: Thank you to all who nominated our outstanding colleagues to receive well deserved recognition for their service and dedication to our organization and music education.

As most of us are returning from the MMEA Conference as a performer, clinician, or participant, let us all take a moment to reflect that we do this for the benefit of our students. As music educators, we often find our focus and attention directed towards matters other than teaching music to kids. However, all of our daily decisions and interactions we make as professionals WILL and DO impact the quality of our students’ musical learning. In whatever capacity

you attended the conference, I hope you make it one of your goals to come away with something that will help you be a better music educator. Whether it be an inspiring concert, a great clinic, or a discussion of what works with colleagues; transfer that energy and enthusiasm towards teaching music to your students.

Detailed information regarding all upcoming music festivals are posted on our website (www.slsmea. com). Please update your contact information in our directory, found on our website. If you have any questions, please email me at aaronlehde@gmail. com. Finally, I invite all of our members to become more actively involved in SLSMEA by volunteering their time, suggesting ideas, mentoring, attending honor group rehearsals, or running for office. Check the website often and best of luck for a rewarding and successful spring semester.
