Reired Column: Where are the now? Buddy Hannaford, Reired Members Chair

Wendell Doyle, featured retiree.

I taught from 1962 until 1992 in the Missouri schools of Braymer, Brookfield, and Platte City. My first year I taught vocal music in grades one thru twelve. During the other years, I taught junior and senior high band. For the next twenty years, I worked four different jobs, which involved interpersonal relationships. I am active in my church, professional education organizations, and the Northland Senior Adult Choir. My wife and I enjoy our family, traveling, and attending concerts and theater productions.

My advice to young teachers is to maintain a positive attitude and be involved in professional organizations. Use current and retired teachers to help encourage you. Have goals, which motivate you and your students to achieve accomplishments within realization for both. Always remember – IF IT WAS NOT FOR YOUR STUDENTS, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE A JOB!

Sherry Gilpin Printz, featured retiree.

I taught choral music for 31 years at Santa Fe School District grades 1-12, Higginsville grades 6-12, and Blue Springs South High School grades 10-12. Currently I’m teaching Music Appreciation at SFCC in Sedalia and directing the Chancel Choir at FUMC in Warrensburg. I judge all-district/ all-state choir auditions, district and state music contests, show choir festivals, and have been the treasurer of Missouri Choral Directors Association 14 years.

Life-long learning must be a constant in the teaching profession. As teachers, we must continually update our teaching techniques, and especially find new literature for our choirs. Conferences such as MMEA and MCDA are a great resource in helping us keep current in our chosen field.
