CHAMBER NEWS Cyber security in the spotlight
Business Continuity Awareness Week (BCAW) takes place between 15-19 May, with this year’s focus on cyber resilience. Cyber resilience is an area of increasing concern
for the business community. The theme of this year’s BCAW was chosen following a survey after BCAW 2016 by the Business Continuity Institute. Of all the suggestions made for this year’s theme, one-third related to cyber resilience. In 2016, the then Minister of State for

Culture and the Digital Economy Ed Vaizey MP said: “The UK is a world- leading digital economy and this Government has made cyber security a top priority. Too many firms are losing money, data and consumer confidence with the vast number of cyber attacks. It’s absolutely crucial businesses are secure and can protect data.” The Chamber has teamed up with the Local
Resilience Partnerships in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire to coordinate a programme of awareness raising during the week. This activity will mainly be delivered through a
coordinated series of social media posts, directing people towards useful guidance and examples of best practice for businesses. The Chamber’s activities during Business
Continuity Week sits within the broader context of its efforts to promote awareness of business continuity to members, especially when it comes to
the ever-increasing and complex world of cyber risk. Cyber crime has the ability to cause significant
damage to organisations and businesses of all shapes and sizes and at any given time. Consequently the business community is encouraged to have a business continuity planning process in place and to consider the IT/data risk as part of their overall strategy. It is hoped that initiatives such as
Business Continuity Awareness Week and the work being undertaken by the Chamber’s Business Crime department will help switch on businesses to the risks of cyber crime and how to counteract them; becoming more secure and resilient as a result. During BCAW there will be online
resources available to businesses via social media, so keep an eye on
@EMChamberNews on Twitter. The Chamber will also co-host a Cyber Resilience
event on 17 May between 4-6pm at Loughborough University which will promote business continuity to all delegates and encourage members to consider all risks to their business and the potential impact these would have on their organisation, including: • Actions to minimise risk • Impact of loss of data or IT functionality • Reputational damage of attack • Compliance issues arising from breach

Your People – Your Business – Your Success
Unique positioning in the recruitment industry can be challenging. Astute’s team re-positioned themselves to become a specialist SME financial recruitment business, recruiting solely for industry. What’s more, Astute is the only recruitment business to offer a Triple-Point-Guarantee. If things go wrong, they work with their clients to fix the problem and will penalise themselves financially in the process. This boils down to confidence in the provision of a service second to none and gives comfort to businesses using the services of a recruitment company for the first time.
With a new website, social media channels and a business development strategy, which has nothing to do with selling, they’ve gained new regional recognition and picked up numerous awards.
