Champions aim to open the door for more exports

The Department for International Trade has announced 28 Export Champions across the Midlands as part of the ambitious Midlands Engine strategy. The Export Champions, made up of individuals from

some of the region’s most celebrated and respected businesses, include 14 from the East Midlands; ten of which are either strategic partners, patrons or members of the Chamber. The role of the Export Champions will be to raise the

profile of exporters in the region and help others realise the exporting opportunities that exist. They will use the wealth of experience and knowledge

they have as individuals – as well as the companies they represent – in order to motivate, encourage and inspire would-be exporters across the region. The Midlands Engine, supported by the Chamber,

brings together 11 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) – including D2N2 (Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire) and LLEP (Leicester and Leicestershire) with a collaborative plan to boost productivity, attract inward investment, increase connectivity and build a regional tourism offer. Individuals and companies associated with the Chamber that form part of the 28-strong Export Champions are: • Liz Fothergill CBE – Chairman, Pennine Healthcare • Stuart Garner – CEO, Norton Motorcycles • Malcolm Hall MBE – Managing Director, Hall-Fast Industrial Supplies

• Susan Hallam – Managing Director, Hallam Internet • Dr Nik Kotecha – CEO, Morningside Pharmaceutical • Kevin Oakes – Chairman, Royal Crown Derby • George Paul – Executive Director, Bradbury & Son • Anil Puri – Chairman, Purico Group • Shahid Sheikh OBE – Managing Director, Clifton Packaging Group

• Graham Tyres – Managing Director, Newson Gale 16 business network April 2017

‘My fellow Export Champions and I are looking forward to spreading the word about the value of exporting’

Dr Nik Kotecha, Chief Executive Officer, Morningside Pharmaceutical and Chair of the Chamber’s International Trade Steering Group, said: “It is an honour to be appointed as one of the inaugural Export Champions for the Midlands. This is an incredibly exciting time for businesses across the region, and my fellow Export Champions and I are looking forward to spreading the word about the value of exporting. “The Midlands Engine has a lot to offer the world,

and I look forward to raising the profile of exporting throughout the region, helping businesses to develop opportunities and fulfil their global potential.” Ian Harrison, Director of Export at the Department

for International Trade in the Midlands, said: “It is our mission as the Department for International Trade to continue to show our export strength in the Midlands and I hope the Export Champions, who I am extremely grateful for committing their valuable time, are seen as positive examples that will inspire the next generation of international success stories.” Diane Simpson, the Chamber’s Deputy Chief

Executive, added: “To have ten organisations so heavily associated with the Chamber as Export Champions for the Midlands is a fantastic achievement and highlights the calibre of business people and companies we have across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. “I am sure that Stuart, Malcolm, Susan, Nik, Kevin,

George, Anil, Shahid, Graham and, of course, Liz – a past Chamber President – will add great value in their roles and create positive outcomes for companies on our patch that are looking to trade internationally.”
